Zhongping Chen

Dr. Zhongping Chen is a professor of biomedical engineering at the UCI Henry Samueli School of Engineering . He also serves as the director of the Functional OCT Laboratory at UCI Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic.  Dr. Chen specializes in optical coherence tomography, biomedical imaging, biophotonics, bioMEMS and optical Doppler tomography.

He is the co-founder and chairman of the board of directors for OCT Medical Imaging, Inc., a company founded through Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic’s Photonic Incubator. OCT Medical Imaging is perfecting technologies that simultaneously utilize ultrasound and infrared images to acquire real-time images of blood vessels.

Among numerous awards, Dr. Chen has been named a fellow of the Optical Society of America, the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. Dr. Chen is on the editorial boards of “Biomedical Engineering Letter,” “Reports in Medical Imaging” and the “Journal of Bioengineering & Biomedical Science.”  He is a founder and council member of the Head and Neck Optical Diagnostics Society.

Dr. Chen earned his Ph.D. in applied physics and his M.S. in electrical engineering from Cornell University. He earned his B.S. in applied physics from Shanghai Jiaotong University.
