Infraderm, LLC, housed in the UCI Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic Photonic Incubator and a spin-off from the Nonlinear Optical Microscopy (NLOM) Lab led by Mihaela Balu, received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award.  The $263,000 SBIR award, granted by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Biotechnology, is to develop a fast, large area multiphoton exoscope (FLAME) device for clinical skin imaging. Potential applications include improving clinical diagnosis, particularly of skin cancers, guiding effective treatment and advancing clinical and cosmetic/pharmaceutical research by providing access to dynamic cellular and molecular processes during therapy. Alexander Fast, a former T32 postdoctoral fellow in the NLOM lab, leads the SBIR effort. Mihaela Balu is a co-founder of Infraderm, LLC.
