Dr. Mihaela Balu anticipates openings for various Specialists series levels in her lab group, which focuses on advancing the technology development of instrumentation based on multiphoton microscopy for pre-clinical and clinical applications. The initial position is a minimum 1-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Junior Specialists – Should possess a baccalaureate degree by the date of hire(or equivalent degree preferably in Physics, Chemistry, or Optical Engineering) or equivalent research experience.

Assistant Specialists – Should possess expertise consistent with four to six years of training and/or experience in the relevant specialization. Dr. Anthony J. Durkin: The Durkin lab at the Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic has multiple open positions. Potential applicants should have an interest in translational optical imaging. Prof. Brian J. F. Wong, M.D., Ph.D., is a Biomedical Engineering Professor at the University of California, Irvine and the Vice Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. He runs a translational research lab at the Beckman Laser Institute of UC Irvine primarily focusing on developing nascent medical devices for use in surgery with an emphasis on optical technologies. He anticipates Specialist series academic positions opening this year.

The job responsibilities include collaborating with scientists to develop and refine imaging techniques, maintaining research protocols (e.g., IRB, IACUC, etc.), and coordinating with clinicians and researchers to conduct animal and human studies. Furthermore, advanced job functions include designing and performing experiments in support of ongoing projects, processing and analyzing data using computer software or self-written algorithms, and contributing to scientific presentations and publications as needed.

Skills required include a solid understanding of MATLAB and mathematics ideally at least through differential equations. Prior experience in optics is not required, though encouraged. Other preferred skillsets include C/C++, Solidworks, and 3D printing.

The salary is entry-level (commensurate with qualifications and experience) for the institution, and the position is available for at least one year. This is an ideal position for applicants who wish to gain clinical exposure to pursue medical school, graduate studies in biomedical engineering, or work in industry.
