Liangzhong (Shawn) Xiang

Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering and Radiology
Faculty, UCI Convergence Optical Sciences Initiative (COSI)

Liangzhong (Shawn) Xiang is an associate professor with joint appointments in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology. In July 2020, he successfully relocated his “Theranostics with Radiation-Induced Ultrasound Emission (TRUE)” lab from the University of Oklahoma (OU) to UCI with research focused on biomedical imaging and image-guided treatment. At OU, he served as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and was awarded the Lloyd G. and Joyce Austin Presidential Professorship (2020). Prior to OU, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship training in medical physics at Stanford Medical School where he was awarded the DoD Prostate Cancer Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Dr. Xiang and his laboratory team were the first to report x-ray-induced acoustic computed tomography (XACT), fast proton-induced acoustic imaging (PAI) and electroacoustic tomography (EAT). He is the recipient of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) Award (R37), Research Scholar Award from the American Cancer Society and the Oklahoma Center for Advanced Science and Technology (OCAST) grant from Oklahoma State with over $3 million active grant support.

In 2017, Dr. Xiang was awarded the Nancy L. Mergler Faculty Mentor Award for Undergraduate Research. His students have been awarded the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) Education Scholarship (2018, 2019), SPIE Travel Scholarship (2016) and Trainee Research Prize from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA 2015).

Dr. Xiang has served as conference chairs for the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) annual meeting (2019) and International Conference on Information Optics and Photonics (CIOP 2018).  He served as an SPIE Student Chapter advisor, associate editor of Medical Physics journal and grant reviewer for the NIH, Department of Energy (DOE), Russian Science Foundation (RSF) and Helmholtz Association of German Research Centre.
