Bernard Choi

Professor, Biomedical Engineering
Professor, Surgery

Dr. Bernard Choi is a professor in UCI’s department of surgery and biomedical engineering where he serves as the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies.  He leads the Microvascular Therapeutics and Imaging (MTI) Laboratory at UCI Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic.

Dr. Choi is a leader in the development and application of in-vivo optical imaging methods and technologies. He applies his expertise to monitoring biological tissues in normal and diseased states and for novel therapy discovery. In the MTI laboratory, Dr. Choi and his team are pursuing non-invasive blood flow imaging techniques that will speed diagnosis and reduce costs in a clinical setting. He leads research efforts in the use of chemical agents to reduce the optical scattering of biological tissue.

Dr. Choi has received multiple teaching awards from the UCI Engineering Student Council, Office of the Chancellor and the School of Engineering. He currently serves as co-chair for the Photonics in Dermatology and Plastic Surgery conference held annually at the SPIE Photonics West symposium. Dr. Choi has been named a Fellow of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. He received the prestigious Arnold & Mabel Beckman Fellowship.

Dr. Choi earned his Ph.D. and M.S.E. in biomedical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin. He earned his B.S. in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University.
