Eric Potma

Dr. Eric Potma is a professor of chemistry and an adjunct professor in the UCI School of Medicine. His laboratory develops chemical imaging techniques for studying molecular and biological systems.

In his research, Dr. Potma seeks to advance novel imaging techniques to unveil the molecular secrets of microscopic biological systems. For this purpose, Dr. Potma and his team helped develop coherent Raman scattering (CRS), sum-frequency generation (SFG) and photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) imaging techniques.

Dr. Potma is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and has received the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award (2009) and the Department of Energy Early Career Research Award (2010). He has authored over a 100 peer reviewed articles. Representative review articles include “The Need for Speed,” “Biological Imaging with Coherent Raman Scattering Microscopy: a Tutorial” and “Stimulated Raman Scattering: from Bulk to Nano.”

Before joining UCI Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic, Dr. Potma was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. He earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
