Wangcun Jia

Associate Research Professor, Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic

Dr. Wangcun Jia is an associate researcher at UCI Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic. Along with his duties at the Institute, he serves as a faculty mentor for the Institite’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) students.

Dr. Jia has a multidisciplinary background in thermal engineering, optical diagnostics, biophotonics and clinical research.  His research has been directed toward developing and optimizing novel imaging modalities and energy-based treatment strategies for cutaneous vascular malformations with his chief focus on port wine stain birthmarks.

He is a leading expert in the areas of: 1) dynamic spray cooling of biological tissue; 2) optimization of dosimetry for laser dermatologic surgery; 3) optical technologies to image microvasculature in skin; 4) modeling of laser-tissue interaction and bio-heat transfer; 5) use of anti-angiogenic agents to modulate the skin’s wound-healing response after pulse laser exposure and 6) design and management of clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of medical devices to treat vascular birthmarks.

Dr. Jia has received numerous grants to further his investigation of port wine stain removal. Along with the Institute’s Medical Director Dr. J. Stuart Nelson and his team, he has co-authored multiple patents in the area of dynamic cooling. He has been the recipient of the Dr. Michael W. Berns Achievement Award, Dr. Horace Furumoto Innovations Professional Development Award and UCI Faculty Career Development Award.

Dr. Jia earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He earned his B.S. in power machinery engineering and his M.S. in automotive engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China.
