The School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Beckman Laser Institute, located at the University of California, Irvine, is anticipating openings for Project Scientists, Assistant and Associate Project Scientists to work with the following faculty:

Michael Berns, Ph.D., periodically seeks applicants with an expertise for the design and construction of novel new laser-based optical microscopes. Applicants should have proven experience in the application of these new technologies, which are focused around photonics and laser interactions in a focused microscope spot. Candidate must be able to provide physics and optics expertise and at the same time, work specifically to integrate various new optical technologies into current systems. Experience in molecular biology and cell culture is also desirable. Candidates for this position should hold a Ph.D. and should have less than five years of postdoctoral training. They should possess the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting.

Zhongping Chen, Ph.D., seeks applicants for a position in the area of Biomedical Optics at the Beckman Laser Institute and to collaborate with the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, University of California, Irvine. Research areas that are of particular interests include the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT), multiphoton endoscopy, intravascular photoacoustic tomography, and other biophotonic imaging technologies.

Bruce Tromberg, Ph.D. seeks lead project manager applicants in Biomedical Optics Medical Device Development for Cancer Detection. Responsibilities include developing non-invasive optical devices for research and clinical studies in breast cancer. We seek individuals with expertise in optical technologies using semiconductor lasers, optical fibers, computers, and solid-state detectors. Knowledge of electronics, RF techniques, and software control of instrumentation is desirable.

Brian Wong, M.D., Ph.D. seeks applicants for a position in the area of Biomedical Optics at the Beckman Laser Institute, University of California, Irvine. Research areas of particular interests include optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other biophotonic imaging technologies.

Christopher P.J. Barty, Ph.D., seeks qualified applicants for part-time (50%) associate project scientist positions. Activities include literature surveys and comparisons of existing accelerator, laser and x-ray technologies, numerical simulations of existing accelerator, laser and x-ray technologies, surveys of existing synchrotron x-ray applications and development of requirements tables for these applications and assistance in the establishment of R&D laboratory infrastructure for research related to laser-Compton light sources. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Physics. Applicants must have a proven record of research and specialized training. Positions are dependent on extramural funding. Initial appointments are for one year and renewal will be dependent on availability of support. Salary is commensurate with experience.
