Postdoctoral Scholar Positions

The School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Beckman Laser Institute, located at the University of California, Irvine, is anticipating openings for Postdoctoral Scholars to work with the following faculty:

Updated 10/22
Dr. Anthony Durkin is seeking applicants for a post-doctoral position in the area of Biomedical Optics at the Beckman Laser Institute. Research areas that are of particular interests include:

1) Measurement and analysis of skin and skin cancer; technologies include both the superficial diffuse optical spectroscopy and Modulated imaging.
2) Quantitative imaging of wounds using Modulated Imaging.

The person who fills this position will collect pre-clinical and clinical data, carry out data analysis and modeling, perform validation studies on tissue simulating phantoms, and participate in technology development. Candidates should be articulate and have more than casual interest in publishing. The person who ultimately fills this role will have a burning interest in the biomedical component of the research.

Candidates should have a doctoral degree. They should possess the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting, and familiarity with biomedical optics concepts is desired. All applicants should send a CV and names of three references to adurkin@uci.edu or by mail to Dr. Anthony Durkin, Beckman Laser Institute, University of California, Irvine, 1002 Health Sciences Road, Irvine, CA 92697-1475. Salary is negotiable and will depend upon the candidate.s experience. The appointment is for one year with potential for renewal based on performance and funding. The University of California is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity.

Bruce Tromberg, Ph.D. is recruiting for a training fellowship in Biomedical Optics Medical Device Development for Cancer Detection. Responsibilities include developing non-invasive optical devices for research and clinical studies in breast cancer. We seek individuals with expertise in optical technologies using semiconductor lasers, optical fibers, computers, and solid-state detectors. Knowledge of electronics, rf techniques, and software control of instrumentation is desirable.

J. Stuart Nelson, M.D., Ph.D. is seeking applicants with an interest in using and developing remote optical and thermal sensing techniques to study the effects of laser interaction with biological tissues in general and human skin in particular. Such techniques are based on pulsed photothermal radiometry, infrared tomography and optical coherence tomography. Experience in applied laser biology is desirable.

Michael Berns, Ph.D. periodically seeks applicants with an expertise for the design and construction of novel new laser-based optical microscopes. Applicants should have proven experience in the application of these new technologies, which are focused around photonics and laser interactions in a focused microscope spot. Candidate must be able to provide physics and optics expertise and at the same time, work specifically to integrate various new optical technologies into current systems. Experience in molecular biology and cell culture is also desirable.

Candidates for this position should hold a Ph.D. and should have less than five years of postdoctoral training. They should possess the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting.

Brian J.F. Wong, MD, PhD is seeking applicants for post-doctoral fellow positions at the Beckman Laser Institute. Applicants with a broad background are encouraged to apply, but consideration is given to those with an extensive background in optics or medical device design. Dr. Wong's work is focused in three areas: 1) development of optical imaging technology, 2) characterization of thermoviscoelasticity and shape change in living tissues, and 3) development of novel light activated/modulated therapeutic regimens.

Candidates should have a PhD in engineering (ideally electrical or optical) for the post-doctoral fellow position. Communication and writing skills are paramount.

Candidates should have a BS or MS in engineering. Communication and writing skills are paramount.

Vickie LaMorte, Ph.D., is seeking applicants with an interest in using and developing optical techniques to study and perturb the dynamic events in the cell. Such techniques are based on confocal and two photon microscopy, microinjection, laser scissors and laser tweezers. Experience in cellular and molecular biology is desirable.

Candidates for the postdoctoral position should hold a Ph.D. (preferably in biology) and should have less than five years of postdoctoral training. They should possess the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting, and familiarity with microscopy concepts is desired. The initial appointment will be a one-year period, with possibility of extension, dependent in part upon extramural funding.

Dr. Zhongping Chen, Ph.D. is seeking applicants for a position in the area of Biomedical Optics at the Beckman Laser Institute and collaborate with the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, University of California, Irvine. Research areas that are of particular interests include the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the integration of the advance in microfabrication technology with OCT for functional imaging of tissue structure and physiology.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree. They should possess the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting, and familiarity with biomedical optics concepts is desired.

All applicants should send a CV and the names of three references to the faculty researcher above at the Beckman Laser Institute, University of California, Irvine, California 92612-1475. Salary level is negotiable, and will depend upon the candidate's experience. All appointments are for one year with potential for extension dependent upon performance and funding. The University of California, Irvine is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity.
