Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy

Specific Aims

Functional Optimization Using Broadband Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy

Aim 1: Probe Development
Develop a scanning hand-held broadband DOS breast probe capable of spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution for quantitative optical and physiological property measurements in human subjects.
Personnel: Albert Cerussi (investigator), Sean Merritt (graduate student), Shenghao Tseng (graduate student), Amanda Durkin (engineer).

Aim 2: Translational Studies
Use our three existing broadband DOS systems to initiate a dual-center translational study at UC Irvine and UC San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Centers.
Personnel: David Hsiang (Co-PI), John Butler (Medical Director), Nola Hylton (investigator), Laura Esserman (Medical Director), Natasha Shah (investigator), Albert Cerussi (investigator), Montana Compton (Clinical Coordinator).

Aim 3: Tissue Optical Indices
Develop "Tissue Optical Indicies (TOI)" that report on functional parameters related to metabolism, angiogenesis and cell/matrix density.
Personnel: Albert Cerussi (investigator), Christine McLaren (investigator), Natasha Shah (investigator), Sean Merritt (graduate student)

Aim 4: DOS-MRI studies
Develop a broadband, multi-position DOS reflectance probe for small animal studies that can be integrated into a 4 Tesla MRI.
Personnel: Orhan Nalcioglu (Co-PI), Gultekin Gulsen (investigator), Sean Merritt (graduate student)
