Developmental ProjectsYear 4 Eight developmental projects, totaling $250,000 (total
costs), were awarded in Year 4. Three new (E2, E3 and E8) projects were awarded,
and five of the projects began their second year of
funding. Each application was reviewed based on
innovation, relevance to Team 1 goals, and investigators. Funds were awarded to these projects
because they cover a broad spectrum of activities important to the network
goals including: database development, standardization of histopathology
methods, development of novel measurement protocols, and phantom development.
Projects were ranked and funds were awarded according to agreement with Network
research priorities. A short summary of the projects’ specific aims, studies
and results, significance, and plans is included in the sections that follow
(E.1-E.8). Table E.1 lists awarded projects including principal
investigator, performance institution, and title. Our three highest priority
areas continue to include; Handheld probe platform
standardization and reference platform standardization, Database Development
and Computing Infrastructure Design, and Pathology Validation and
Standardization.

developmental funds in Year 4. Year 3 Nine developmental projects,
totaling $250,000 (total costs), were awarded in Year 3. Of these projects two
were new (E6 and E7), six of the projects began their
second year of funding, and one was a result of a 2005 collaborative
developmental project award. Each application was reviewed based on innovation, relevance to Network goals, and investigators.. Funds were awarded to thirteen developmental projects covering a broad spectrum of activities including database development, standardization of histopathology methods, development of novel measurement protocols, and supporting student training. Projects were ranked and funds were awarded according to agreement with Network research priorities. A short summary for the first four projects, specific aims, studies and results, significance, and plans is included in the sections that follow. The other projects are summarized in the report that follows, as the work performed directly supplements the specific aims of those projects. Table E.1 lists awarded projects including principal investigator, performance institution, and title. Our three highest priority areas continue to include:

3 Year 2 Fourteen proposals were submitted in September 2004 for a share of $250,000 total costs. Each application was reviewed based on innovation, relevance to Network goals, and investigators. Funds were awarded to thirteen developmental projects covering a broad spectrum of activities including database development, standardization of histopathology methods, development of novel measurement protocols, and supporting student training. Projects were ranked and funds were awarded according to agreement with Network research priorities. A short summary for each project’s, specific aims, studies and results, significance, and plans is included in the sections that follow. Each project was reviewed by the Executive Committee with particular attention to the possibility of leveraging award funds. Table E.1 lists awarded projects including principal investigator, performance institution, title, amount awarded and leverage amount/source. Leveraging NTROI funds accelerated the number of projects funded and stimulated collaborations. As a result of receiving developmental project funds Dr. Wendy Wells collaborated with her department and institution to acquire a commercial image analysis system. Those efforts came to fruition in April 2005 when a clinical laboratory contract was signed with Biogenix to include their iVision image analysis system, valued between $150,000 and $200,000. Seed funding was awarded to projects that presented great potential for collaboration within the NCI Network. Our three highest priority areas include:
