Medical Free Electron Laser Program

Beginning in 1986, the Beckman Laser Institute is one of the original Centers funded by the Medical Free Electron Laser program (MFEL). Once a program that was highly focused on developing clinical applications of FEL's and studying the mechanisms of high-power pulsed laser interactions with biological systems, it has evolved to focus on developing optical technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems directly related to combat medicine and bioterrorism.
